February 24, 2021
On Monday, February 22, El Chapo’s wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, was arrested on international drug trafficking charges. Emma is a dual U.S.-Mexican citizen from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico. She is also accused of helping her husband run his multibillion-dollar cartel and plot his audacious escape from a Mexican prison in 2015. El Chapo otherwise known as Joaquin Guzman has been the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel for over 25 years. In a single-count criminal complaint, Coronel was charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, and marijuana in the U.S. According to an arrest affidavit, when Guzman was hiding from Mexican authorities between 2012 and 2014 Coronel allegedly “relayed messages” on his behalf “in furtherance of drug trafficking activities.” When Guzman was finally arrested in 2014, she allegedly continued to relay messages she was given during her visits to him. She is being charged with being a key role in the escape of Guzman in the 2015 prison escape. She had the help of Guzman’s sons and a witness, who is now cooperating with the feds.
