Cancel Culture

Cancel+Culture

Cancel culture has become an integral part of internet culture since 2020. Over the past year, we have seen numerous celebrities, brands and films be retrospectively cancelled. Movies including Dumbo, Peter Pan, and The Aristocats are being cancelled.

Peter Pan is being cancelled because of it’s depiction of Native Americans. In the film, Native American tribes were identified as “redskins” which was very offensive during that time period. Even the Washington football team changed its name in the year 2020.

The Aristocats film is being cancelled because they feel that the Chinese are being mocked. In the film it shows the Siamese cat playing the drums with chopsticks and mocking Chinese language by saying things like “Shanghai, Hong Kong, Egg Foo Young. Fortune cookie always wrong.”

Dumbo is being cancelled for being linked to racism towards African Americans. There is evident racism throughout the film toward African Americans. In fact, the lead crow is called Jim Crow (voiced by white Cliff Edwards) in reference to America’s Jim Crow segregation laws.

These movies are being cancelled because of the negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. The Cancel Culture is working to get more movies, books, songs, and etc. cancelled every day for these offensive things. They have also cancelled things like Dr. Seuss, Mr. Potato Head from Toy Story, and are working to get Eminem and Space Jam 2 cancelled as well.
