Mercyhurst Hockey Player Faces Charges

College hockey player Carson Briere is facing three misdemeanor charges after a video showed him and another athlete “pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a set of stairs inside a bar,” according to the New York Post. Briere was changed with disorderly conduct, criminal mischief, and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief. Erie, Pennsylvania police filed the charges against him, and he is due in court in May. The other athlete, Lakers lacrosse team senior Patrick Carrozzi, faces the same charges.

On March 11th, Briere and Carrozzi were caught pushing Sydney Benes’s wheelchair down a set of stairs at Sullivan’s Pub and Eatery. Benes is a double amputee; she purchased the chair over a year ago for $2,000. She filed a complaint that stated the accident “damaged the left brake handle, broke the right arm rest’s plastic molding, bent a rear handle and caused the wheels to drag when moving forward.” A GoFundMe has been created for Benes to be able to repair the damages to her chair, and since the eleventh, over $8,000 has been raised. She plans to keep enough to fix the damages, but then donate the rest to charity. Briere was forced by the bouncers at the bar to apologize to her; Benes believed the apology was “insincere.”

Briere stated he was “deeply sorry” for his behavior, according to a statement he released after the video went viral. His father, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere, called his son’s shocking actions “inexcusable.” Briere has been banned from the bar and suspended from the hockey team. An investigation by the university is still ongoing.
