The Met Gala is a charity event that is considered a fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It has traditionally been time to mark the opening of its annual fashion exhibition. This year the Met Gala took place on Monday, May 1 in New York. It celebrated the opening of the Costume Institute exhibition “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Year after year, the event raises eight-figure sums. The Met Gala is organized by Anna Wintour who is a British media executive based in New York City who served as editor-in-chief of Vogue since 1988. Since 1955, Anna Wintour has decided who got invited to the Met Gala, inviting almost every A-list celebrity known. The Met Gala has themes each year that the celebrities compete in to have the best outfit. For example, the 2022 theme was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”, and the 2023 theme was “In Honor of Karl” intended to honor the late designer, who died in 2019 at age 85. Karl Lagerfeld was a fashion industry icon and one of the most acclaimed designers in the 20th century, spending many of his years thriving in brands like Fendi and Chanel, collaborating and creating ready-to-wear and couture lines as well as his own label later on. At the Met Gala, everything is secret. Guests must abide by the no phone and no social media policy inside the building, however, you can see exclusive photos from inside the Met Gala through many Vouge websites and social media after paparazzi. The event usually involves a high-profile performer (like Rihanna or Justin Beiber). This year, Lizzo shut down the gala with her shimmering, surprise performance. Guests get to explore the exhibition before sitting down together for dinner. In conclusion, the Met Gala is something A-List celebrities and audiences look forward to every year. From the pearls to the cats, who knows what will happen at next year’s Met Gala.
