New TSSAA Guidelines

New TSSAA Guidelines

Ben Shelton and Nick Allen

On Thursday, January 28th, 2021 Governor Bill Lee announced that Executive Order 74 will be suspended starting Monday. This will lift the COVID-19 restrictions set on indoor school sporting events. Dyer County will still have limited capacity, require masks, and social distance. For fans to attend games they will need to go to the GoFan app and purchase a ticket. The tickets will go on sale at 8:00 am the day before the game. People that have a season pass or reserved seats will still be able to attend games.

This comes after a DCHS Student, Abby West, called for the Governor to take action. As a Senior at DCHS, West was feeling the impacts of not being able to come to games and perform with the dance team. Cheerleading was also not allowed to come to the games and only the parents of the players were allowed to watch the games. West makes a case that the contacts sports are allowed to play, but sports like cheer and dance are not allowed even though they can social distance with masks. For some students, it could’ve been the end of their athletic career and potential for college scholarship opportunities. She ended by thanking the Governor for trying to keep everyone safe during the pandemic and she hoped he would consider the players and people affected by this mandate. A couple of days later, the new mandate was put into order and now games have finally seemed like they have come to a little bit of “normalcy.” Students are relieved that the guidelines have been changed and are able to return to the games.
