According to the Labor Department, there have been over 33 strikes in the U.S. in the past year. The percentage of these protests has risen to 43% which is the largest number of work stoppages in the last twenty years. These strike waves were said to have been caused by employers whose behavior and decisions were inconsistent with worker power.
In 2023, there were over 462,000 workers who went on strike at some point, there were 16.7 million days of work lost when the number of workers and the length of the strikes were taken into consideration. The strike caused by SAG-AFTRA, which represents 160,000 actors, was off for over four months. Different companies such as Anheuser-Busch, a brewery, are prepared to go on strike on March 1st, with no new contract. There is a prediction of possible work stoppages which could make 2024 headlines.
Even airline workers are being affected by these strikes. The federal labor negotiator has been told by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, which represents 25,000 flight attendants at American Airlines. To declare a stop that may lead to another strike. Many negotiations with other airlines are being tried by member airlines and unions that represent more than over 50,000 flight attendants.
