The year 2020 has become historical and known as “one of the worst years.” due to the COVID outbreak that spread worldwide back in March. Because of the pandemic, the world has had to adapt to the changes the virus brings, but this virus might take the thing many people look forward to each year: Thanksgiving.

Many states have already announced that they have certain restrictions on how you can celebrate the occasion. Oregon’s governor, Kate Brown, has warned families that if their household has more than the required number of people in their homes, they can be facing a month in jail and a fine of $1,250. Some people believe this is reasonable, but here’s why you shouldn’t be punished for celebrating time with family and good food.

We are living in scary times, yes, but I believe in times like these we need as much time as we can get with out families. We celebrate Thanksgiving to take the time to sit back and recognize our blessings and say the things we’re thankful for. After this year, we need a day to sit down with the people we love and reflect on the good things we have left in such a troubling time.

From a personal stance, I lost both of my grandparents this year in a matter of three months, and if it’s taught me anything is that we never know when we’ll see our family members and friends for the last time. If you’re sick, then yes, skip out this Thanksgiving. If someone in your household has been tested or is sick, skip out this Thanksgiving. But there is no reason healthy people should be restricted from seeing their families, possibly for the last time.

During the upcoming holidays, remember to stay safe and healthy, but also remember to count your blessings and keep your loved ones close Being thankful is how we all need to end this horrible year.
