The history of Santa Clause

Caitlyn Berry, Sports Editor

The legend of Santa Clause can be traced back hundreds of years to a man named St. Nicholas. The name santa clause came from his nickname, Sinter Klaas. Today, he is thought of as the jolly man who brings toys to children on Christmas. It is believed that Nicholas was born around A.D. 280. He was admired for his piety and kindness. It is said that he gave away all of his wealth and traveled the country side helping the sick and poor. Nicholas made his first appearance into American culture towards the end of the 18th century. Many newspaper articles reported many Dutch groups gathered to honor the anniversary of his death. Now, Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, has a long history steeped in Christmas traditions.
