Hip Hop Takes the Stage in the 56th Pepsi Halftime Show

The Superbowl halftime show started off with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog singing their hit song, “The Next Episode,” and Tupac’s “California Love.” Then 50 Cent surprised us when he made an upside-down entrance singing his song,
“In Da Club.”  The scene then pans to Mary J. Blige singing her hit song, “Family Affair,” which transitioned into, “No Drama.” The only new-age hip-hop artist in the lineup, Kendrick Lamar, shows up singing his song, “Mad City,” surrounded by identical dancers in boxes labeled, “Dre Day.” Finally, Eminem rises up out of the set singing, “8 Mile.” Later in the show, while Dr. Dre was on the piano, Eminem kneeled as an acknowledgment to Colin Kapernick, who kneeled as a peaceful protest against police brutality. This was the first time that the Pepsi Halftime show has had all hip-hop artists perform. All of these artists are also produced by Dr. Dre, so some have called it Dre’s halftime show. Overall, it was a success, and it’s likely that we will see more hip-hop performances at Super Bowls in the future.
